Supporting Growth and New Beginnings: How DLCP's Business Resource Center Empowers Entrepreneurs

Tuesday, April 29, 2025 - 9:45am
Financial Literacy & Second Chances

In recognition of Financial Literacy Month and Second Chance Month, the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) is spotlighting the impactful work of its Business Resource Center (BRC), which plays a critical role in helping District residents turn ideas into sustainable business ventures.

Throughout April, the BRC team has focused on empowering entrepreneurs with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate financial hurdles, build confidence, and create opportunities for long-term success. Whether someone is seeking to better manage their business finances or pursuing entrepreneurship as a fresh start, the BRC is committed to meeting them where they are.

Emir Gur-Ravantab, a member of the BRC team, shared his thoughts on the center’s impact during Financial Literacy Month.

"The BRC has educated prospective and current small business owners across the District on how to best obtain their business licenses and incorporate their businesses, providing them with guidance so they can do it themselves. This helps them avoid relying on third party sources, spending extra money, and enables them to take control of their business trajectory, allowing them to make more money by being licensed with DLCP."

In honor of Second Chance Month, the BRC also recognizes the transformative power of entrepreneurship as a path to renewal. Aurice Long, also from the BRC team, highlighted how starting a business can be a powerful tool for individuals seeking a new beginning.

"It reinforces the confidence to re-enter society and become a voice for others who may be on the same path they once walked. It also empowers them to guide others on how to avoid that path and show that, even if you make a mistake, there's always an opportunity to correct it and do better."

Helping entrepreneurs overcome financial obstacles is a core mission of the BRC. Sharon Thornton reflected on the common challenges new business owners face and how the BRC works to address them.

"The BRC Team is committed to empowering new business owners with tools and access that assist them in establishing and growing their business. One way we accomplish this is by connecting new business owners with our sister agencies and thanking partners that offer funding and grant opportunities. New business owners face many challenges, and financial challenges can be the greatest obstacle. Our mission is to provide knowledge and access to help them overcome barriers and challenges so they can be successful."

As DLCP continues to observe both Financial Literacy Month and Second Chance Month, the agency remains dedicated to uplifting all aspiring business owners, helping them turn knowledge into action and challenges into opportunity.
