Lighting Up DC: Edward Overby’s TNT Fireworks Stand Brings the Spark

For Independence Day, few places in DC capture the spirit of the season quite like the TNT Fireworks stand owned by Edward Overby. Located along bustling New York Avenue NE, next to the Exxon gas station and the Fairfield Inn & Suites Hotel parking lot, Overby’s stand is more than just a pop-up. It’s a neighborhood tradition with roots dating back to 1998.

What started as a small operation at a local garden center has blossomed into a trusted destination for both locals and tourists seeking safe, high-quality fireworks regulated by the DC government. In the District, the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) manages the sale of fireworks and monitors what can and cannot be sold. Only specific types of fireworks that meet the city’s safety standards are allowed at licensed stands like Overby’s.

"We’ve got loyal people that we see every year," said Owner Edward Overby. "They know we’re going to be here. They know our employees personally, and they come back to us because we give great service."

Overby’s dedication goes beyond just selling fireworks. He and his team take the time to get to know each customer’s specific needs. Whether someone is buying for a family gathering, a kids’ party, or a big celebration, the team carefully curates each purchase.

Safety is also a top priority. All products sold are DC-approved, meaning no dangerous explosives or matches are needed. Overby takes special care to educate his customers on these safety features, from wooden-handled sparklers that don’t overheat to fireworks that double as glow bracelets once burned out.

The stand’s location couldn’t be better. With an estimated 187,000 cars passing along New York Avenue daily, the site catches traffic in both directions—perfect for attracting both regular and out-of-town visitors.

The TNT Fireworks team has a long-standing relationship with the property owners, built years ago while doing landscaping work in the area. That connection helped secure the current location, which has proven to be a great spot for the business.

The stand is also uniquely welcoming. Overby’s team is as diverse as his customer base and can even accommodate sign language users and international visitors. Australians, who typically can’t buy fireworks back home, often stop by when staying at nearby hotels, eager to experience the local firework scene.

"We meet people from all over. We just try to hit every aspect to make everyone feel welcome."

For Overby, some of the best moments come from interacting with kids and families who may be experiencing fireworks for the first time.

Despite the growth and changing locations, Overby has no plans to expand beyond his current setup. He’s focused on staying connected to the community, offering a personal touch that big-box stores simply can’t match.

"It’s not about just selling fireworks. It’s about giving people a great experience they can come back to year after year," said Overby.

As the sparks fly this Fourth of July, Edward Overby and his TNT Fireworks stand will once again light up the neighborhood, one personalized firework at a time.
