Celebrate Small Business Saturday: Support DC’s Local Treasures

Friday, November 29, 2024 - 10:00am

Small Business Saturday isn’t just another shopping day—it’s an opportunity to invest in the heart of our DC community. Since its launch in 2010 by American Express, and with support from the Small Business Administration (SBA) starting in 2011, this annual event has inspired millions to shop at small, locally owned businesses. Last year, shoppers nationwide spent an estimated $17 billion at small businesses, showcasing the incredible economic impact of this movement.

Here in DC, small businesses are vital to our community’s identity. Whether it’s the cozy coffee shop down the street, a boutique offering handcrafted goods, or a family-owned restaurant, every purchase helps our neighborhoods thrive. According to American Express, 67 cents of every dollar spent at small businesses stays in the community, fostering local jobs and economic growth.

By designating a day in their honor, we are reminded that these businesses rely on our patronage during critical consumer shopping seasons and year-round. This year, our support is more essential than ever. Consumers are expected to spend $191 less at small businesses this holiday season—a 40% downturn from last year—due to rising costs and inflation. For many small businesses, holiday revenue is a critical factor in their success, making this a pivotal time to shop small.

“This Small Business Saturday, we have a chance to invest directly in the vibrant entrepreneurs who give our neighborhoods their unique character and charm,” said Tiffany Crowe, Director of the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP). “Small businesses aren’t just economic drivers—they’re the cornerstone of our communities. Supporting them means supporting the values, culture, and diversity that make the District a truly special place to live and work.”

Small Business Saturday is also a significant opportunity for local businesses like Chaia Tacos, which has locations in both Chinatown and Georgetown. “For Chaia, Small Business Saturday is a chance to connect with our community and highlight our identity as a local, women-owned business that champions sustainability and seasonal ingredients,” said Suzanne Simon, owner of Chaia Tacos. “In the past, we’ve participated in promotional opportunities with other local businesses and organizations to raise awareness of our mission and what we offer. This day also helps drive higher foot traffic and sales, allowing us to engage with even more customers and supporters.”

This year, Small Business Saturday falls on November 30th, and DLCP encourages all residents and visitors to engage with the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development’s (DSLBD) annual #iBuyDC Challenge.

The #iBuyDC Challenge is a social media campaign designed to amplify and encourage support for DC’s small business community. Shoppers can participate by sharing their small business purchases on social media using the hashtag #iBuyDC and encouraging friends, family, and followers to do the same. By highlighting your favorite finds, you can help inspire others to support local entrepreneurs and celebrate the unique offerings that make DC special. For more details on the campaign and to discover additional ways to support Small Business Saturday across the District, visit dslbd.dc.gov/ibuydc.

Supporting small businesses doesn’t just benefit the local economy; it’s a rewarding experience for consumers. Small shops often offer unique, hand-crafted items and personalized customer service that large retailers can’t match. Plus, shopping small can be less stressful, helping you avoid the chaos of crowded big-box stores during the holidays.

Let’s show our appreciation for the entrepreneurs who enrich our city. Shop local this Small Business Saturday, share your experiences using #iBuyDC, and celebrate the vibrant spirit of DC’s small business community. Together, we can make a difference!
