ADVISORY: Beware of Unlicensed/Illegal Tire Shops

Purchasing tires from an unlicensed or otherwise illegally operating tire shops can place you in financial or physical harm. Unlicensed/illegal tire shops are not regulated, and thus, are operating with proper oversight. These operators often sell defective tires, which are put you in danger of blowouts, car accidents, injuries, or death.

Common risks associated with unlicensed/illegal tire shops include:

  1. Selling tires that are recalled
  2. Selling tires with factory defects
  3. Repairing tires that are too old
  4. Selling the wrong tire size for the wheel
  5. Selling tires with many holes, tire plugs, or tire patches

These are only a few ways unlicensed/illegal tire shops can put you in harm’s way. Below are recommended actions you can take to remain an informed consumer and safe driver:

1. Stay vigilant. Before purchasing tires, verify the tire shop:

  • Has an active Business License
  • Has a valid Certificate of Occupancy
  • Is registered with the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection’s (DLCP) Corporations Division

When purchasing new or used tires:

  1. Know the size of the tire or use the size listed on your current tire
  2. Make sure the tire tread is as deep as a penny and the tire in not dry rotted
  3. Only patch a tire once (get a new tire if you’ve already patched it once or have multiple holes)
  4. Always make sure your tires or properly installed and balanced

2. Report the Scam. If you believe a tire shop is unlicensed or attempting to sell unsafe tires, file a complaint with the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection Consumer Protection Unit.
